Ed Sheeran’s “Divide” (Review)
Anna Gibson ’17 // March 10, 2017
Since about 2011 Ed Sheeran has been one of the biggest stars in the music industry. The 26-year-old has risen to even greater fame since his debut single “A Team”. He has released three albums, which have all had popular hits. His newest album, Divide, was no exception. Even before its release on March 3rd the album was largely anticipated and publicized. Sheeran released two singles on January 6th, 2017. Both “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You” were in the top 10 of Billboards Top 100; this had never been done by an artist before.
Sheeran’s new album has a mixture of different sounds. Some songs are similar to what he has done in the past while others are completely new. He includes many different sounds such as rapping, an orchestra, and music with a club feel. “Galway Girl” is an upbeat song that could be easily danced to and includes a sort of Irish feel within its background music. Another song that has grown very popular is “Dive”. It has more of Sheeran’s normal sound and is a slower pop-blues song.
This album is sure to grow even bigger than Sheeran’s last, making this year another great one for the British pop star. Sheeran’s tour started March 17th and will travel throughout Europe and South America with more dates to possibly be released. This album represents Sheeran well by including a mix of his usual unique sound with new fresh mixture of songs to keep his fans on the edge of their seats.
