Hey Rockets! As you all know, we were out of school for the start of the second semester this year due to the snowy weather. This left us with completing our schoolwork from home. However, sometimes we might need a change of scenery (I know I have). Your local library is A great place to complete schoolwork, study, and just have some quiet time to yourself!
This year, I have especially taken advantage of the public library, and I know that other Assumption students have too. The library I enjoy visiting is the Saint Matthews Eline Library and I definitely recommend checking it out! I have been visiting this library since I was a child and in 2019 they completed an expansion and remodel of the truly amazing library. Of course, there are hundreds of books for you to read from many genres and age levels. The library has various accessible seating arrangements such as desks and chairs that you can work at with friends or independently. There are numerous computers and a few printers that are available for public use. The library also has conference rooms for group meetings. In addition, there is a children’s area that has more fun seating as well as open space for children and families to enjoy reading together.
The Saint Matthews Eline Library is beautiful with its large glass windows, tall ceilings, and its overall family-friendly environment. I recently went this holiday season and they even had a small model winter wonderland made out of small figurines. It was such a cute touch to the library, and I could tell that the visitors really enjoyed the display! The library staff are very helpful and welcoming to all guests.
I went to the library and interviewed a staff member, Trish Christopher, who has been a devoted member of the Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) services. She has been working with LFPL since 2007 and at the Saint Matthews branch for two and a half years. When I asked her why she thinks the library is good for the community, she said, “You come here, and you can learn whatever there is out there to learn.”
She talked with me about the important services the library provides to keep people going. She explained that the library provides assistance to elderly people who are trying to understand technology, books for children who are learning how to read but can’t afford lots of books, classes on various topics, author talks, and more that “help pull the community together.” Christopher also said, “Sometimes we’re a lonely person’s only human contact.” Talking with her taught me a lot about why the library is such an essential part of a community. For students especially, Christopher stated, “We make miracles out of nothing and we are here to support people eventually getting into the workplace and following their dreams.”
Next time you are looking for a place to study, work on a group project, or just find peaceful time away from home, I suggest visiting your local library. It might just become your new favorite study spot! Best of luck with the second-semester Rockets!
And seniors, remember to finish strong and take in every moment!
