On February 6, Assumption High School senior Taryn Morris achieved a special accolade after scoring her 1,000th career point against Butler High School. This achievement was very special for Morris, as she stated “This means a lot to me. Being able to accomplish something that doesn’t happen often, it just shows how much I have worked.”
Morris finished the game with 17 points, with her 1,000th coming in the third quarter at the free throw line. I spoke to head coach, Caryn Kovatch, on how this accomplishment was for her to experience. “Beyond words…As a player, I remember getting my 1,000th point… I’m ecstatic that I got be a part of the memory for T. I am so proud of her and the many years of hard work she’s put in to achieve this significant milestone.” Morris believes her growth in confidence and the new coaching staff believing in her helped her reach this moment.
While this moment was the goal for Morris and staff on February 6, the Rockets were also facing a top-10 opponent in the state. Butler High School, with a record of 18-6 heading into this game, lead the 6th region heading into the state tournament. After speaking with Kovatch about the plan for both reaching Morris’ goal at home, and defeating Butler, she stated “My game plan is always the same: to prepare the team for battle and put them in the best possible position to succeed. We had a focused strategy against Butler, and they executed it flawlessly! I knew that if we were successful as a team, then T would be successful.” Rockets ended the night successful with a 56-47 victory.
Looking forward, the Rockets are now 19-9 on the season and looking to the post-season tournament where Assumption will host districts.
