The first carbonated beverage was created in 1767 by Joseph Priestley, an English scientist who discovered how to infuse water with carbon dioxide. His discovery was the start of soda water, which is the base of most soft drinks. By the year 1876, root beer was made, which kick-started the creation of many other popular drinks, such as Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola.
Fast forward to today, there are more than 450 different soft drinks in just the United States alone. Places have even invented add-ons for the drinks such as fruit purees, creamers, and syrups, calling these “dirty sodas”.
A popular franchise that has been growing from its “dirty sodas” is Swig; a drive-through soda fountain chain primarily located in the western United States. The chain, known for its popular soda add-ons was founded in April 2010 by Nicole Tanner in St. George, Utah. Since then, the franchise has experienced steady growth and, as of January 2025, operates locations in fourteen states, one of which is our very own Kentucky.
One of the most popular drinks at Swig is called “Texas Tab”. This has a base of Dr. Pepper mixed with vanilla and coconut cream. Although it only combines three ingredients, it is a well-known customer favorite due to its creamy flavor. Some other popular drinks include “Strawberry Breeze “, which typically includes carbonated water, sugar-free coconut, sugar-free vanilla, strawberry puree, frozen strawberry, and coconut cream. It is loved for its refreshing and delicious combination of sweet strawberry and a subtle hint of coconut. The “Spring Fling” is made from a base of Dr. Pepper with vanilla, strawberry puree, and coconut cream. Customers rave about the subtle mix of the classic Dr. Pepper and the strawberry puree, creating a dreamy experience.
Not only is Swig known for their drink add-ons, but also their delicious snacks, ranging from soft pretzel bites with cream cheese to pink frosted sugar cookies. Arguably the perfect pair for a sweet treat in the middle of a hot day! Hop on down to our local Swig here in Louisville, located on Poplar Level Road, and get ready for more to open soon!
