Top Ten Thanksgiving Foods

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friendship, but who can forget about the food?  Students and staff members in the Assumption community shared their favorite Thanksgiving foods in an interview, here are the results.

  1. Potato Salad

Let’s be honest, who actually eats potato salad?  This bowl of mustard, mayonnaise, eggs and pickles has mixed reviews from Assumption students.  One senior even commented “I don’t feel good about that” when learning about its ingredients.  A few people who were interviewed said they didn’t mind it, but it definitely was not a favorite.  That’s why Potato Salad earns the number 10 spot on this list.

  1. Chicken and Dumplings

Chicken and Dumplings may not be the most popular Thanksgiving food, but it is well liked in the Assumption community.  With its variety of chicken and vegetables, it’s a healthy and tasty classic that is sure to bring a homey feel to the table.

  1. Stuffing

Stuffing is a popular Thanksgiving food, but it is hardly ever the same.  Stuffing can be made many ways with ingredients varying from family to family.  Many students commented that they only liked their family’s stuffing.  While it’s a popular dish it was far from most students favorite because of its lack of reliability.

  1. Rolls

Rolls are perhaps one of the most iconic Thanksgiving meal choices, which is why it’s appearance at number seven is surprising. The buttery goodness is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face.  Many people suggest dipping it in mashed potatoes and gravy or even filling it with mac and cheese and ham.

  1. Sweet potato Casserole

The sweet potato casserole is a dish made from baked sweet potatoes and a sweet syrup, topped with marshmallows.  The first recipe dates all the way back to the early 1700s and has largely remained the same since then.  If you love the combination of sweet and salty, this dessert may just be for you.

  1. Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin pie is a Thanksgiving staple.  Whether this dish is bought for a store or homemade it rarely disappoints.  This dessert embodies the essence of fall and the only thing that makes it better is a little whipped cream.

  1. Mac and Cheese

You can never go wrong with cheese and noodles.  The best thing about mac and cheese is that you can add anything you want.  Five different cheeses?  Butter?  Pepper?  Anything is possible with this dish which makes it a popular favorite among the Assumption community.

  1. Mashed Potatoes with Gravy

There was a close tie between plain mashed potatoes or mashed potatoes with gravy.  The student who broke the tie commented that “You can never go wrong with more flavor.”  Gravy adds more texture, more flavor and more joy making it a great dish for Thanksgiving.

  1. Ham

Ham is often considered the substitute option for people who don’t like turkey, but a surprising number of students admitted that while they liked both turkey and ham, ham was better.  The students said that the texture and taste were both better, but whatever the reason it is a highly popular dish.

  1. Turkey

Unsurprisingly, turkey is the most popular Thanksgiving food among the Assumption community.  Both teachers and students that were interviewed agreed that Thanksgiving isn’t the same without a turkey, and it was their favorite part of their meal.
