Most public schools around the country use a regular schedule with six to eight classes a day, though there are other schools that participate in block scheduling. Assumption High School, Trinity High School, Mercy Academy, and Sacred Heart Academy all use a schedule that divides their classes into 4 blocks a day. Assumption High School students cherish their block scheduling and the benefits that come with it.
A study at the University of Connecticut showed that students will benefit more from having a block schedule than a traditional one. Block scheduling allows students more time to engage in subjects and build relationships with teachers. However, there is not strong enough evidence to conclude that this type of scheduling benefits students on standardized testing.
The University of Connecticut concludes that longer classes provide time for interactive learning rather than simply lecturing. Some schools only take four courses a semester and have each class every day. Then they switch at the semester mark and take their other four classes. Other schools have different variations of block scheduling with rotating blocks, lunches, trimesters or other untraditional activities.
Assumption High School has been working to find the perfect fit for the community for a long time. The administrators believe that they have finally found it. What do you think?
