On Sunday, September 14th, the Primetime Emmy Awards aired live on CBS. This was the award show’s 77th run and will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze. The Emmy Awards celebrate television and everyone who has contributed, including actors, writers, costume designers, and more. Two shows are awarded for Outstanding Series, one in comedy and one in drama. Here are the twelve nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama Series:
Outstanding Comedy Series
- Abbott Elementary, streaming on Hulu, is nominated for its fourth season. The sitcom follows a public elementary school in Philadelphia and a group of its teachers while in the style of a mockumentary. The creator, executive producer, and co-writer of the show is Quinta Brunson. She also stars as Janine Teagues and is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

- The Bear, streaming on Hulu, is nominated for its third season. The comedy-drama is about chef Carmen Berzatto and his journey remodeling his late brother’s Chicago restaurant. It features many intense, high-emotion scenes while also providing comedic relief. The lead actor playing Berzatto, Jeremy Allen White, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The lead actress playing chef Sydney Adamu is Ayo Edebiri, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
- Hacks, streaming on Max, is nominated for its fourth season. The comedy series follows a famous comedian named Deborah Vance and her growing mentor relationship with a young comedy writer named Ava Daniels. It uses dark comedy and is primarily set in Las Vegas, Nevada. The lead actress, Jean Smart, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
- Nobody Wants This, streaming on Netflix, is nominated for its first season. The romantic comedy follows Joanne and Noah, who fall in love despite the disapproval of their families and their vast differences. It features themes such as cultural differences, with Noah being a Jewish rabbi, and is set in Las Angeles, California. The two lead actors, Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, are both nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress in a Comedy Series.
- Only Murders in the Building, streaming on Hulu, is nominated for its fourth season. The comedy series follows three residents of The Arconia in New York City who have banded together to solve murders happening to other residents, all while creating their own murder podcast. Actor Martin Short, who plays Oliver Putnam, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
- Shrinking, streaming on Apple TV, is nominated for its second season. The comedy drama series follows therapist Jimmy Laird as he grieves the loss of his wife, and decides to use a new, problematic technique for his patients. The lead actor, Jason Segel, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
- The Studio, streaming on Apple TV, is nominated for its first season. The satire comedy series follows Matt Remick as he becomes the head of Continental Studios and must appeal to both corporate demands and the audience of the public. It is set in Los Angeles, California, and features many real, iconic places. The lead actor, Seth Rogen, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
- What We Do In The Shadows, streaming on Hulu, is nominated for its sixth season. The mockumentary series follows four vampire roommates and their adventures living in a house called, “Vampire Residence” in Staten Island, New York. This sixth season is the show’s last season.
Outstanding Drama Series
- Andor, streaming on Disney+, is nominated for its second season. Set in the Star Wars universe, the science fiction drama series follows a rebel spy named Cassian Andor and his missions for the rebellion. The nominated season two is the last season as the series is a prequel to the 2016 movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
- The Diplomat, streaming on Netflix, is nominated for its second season. The political thriller series follows an American diplomat, Kate Wyler, as she assumes her new role as ambassador to the United Kingdom during an international crisis. It focuses on political tension between and within countries, and how it affects the many people involved. Lead actress, Keri Russell, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
- The Last of Us, streaming on Max, is nominated for its second season. The post-apocalyptic drama series is based off the popular video game under the same name. It follows Ellie, a young girl who is immune to the monsters that have destroyed the world, and Joel, who was assigned to help her travel across an apocalyptic America. It features intense emotional scenes and high quality special effects. Both lead actors are nominated for awards with Pedro Pascal (Joel) nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
- Paradise, streaming on Hulu, is nominated for its first season. The political thriller is set in an underground bunker the size of a city three years after an apocalyptic event. It focuses on Xavier Collins, the head of security for the president of the United States as he investigates the president’s death. The lead actor, Sterling K. Brown, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
- The Pitt, streaming on Max, is nominated for its first season. The medical drama is a realistic view of the pressures faced by frontline medical workers. It takes place in one hospital with each episode being an hour of an intense 15-hour shift. It features realistic surgeries and intense emotions from both new and experienced workers, including the main character’s built up anxiety from the COVID-19 pandemic. The lead actor, Noah Wyle, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
- Severance, streaming on Apple TV, is nominated for its second season. The science-fiction psychological thriller follows a group of coworkers who have undergone the “Severance”, meaning they do not retain memories of work when they leave, nor do they retain memories of their personal lives when they come to work. The group, lead by main character Mark Scout, begins to question the reality of their jobs and the corporation they work for. Lead actor Adam Scott is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and lead actress Britt Lower is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
- Slow Horses, streaming on Amazon Prime Video, is nominated for its fourth season. The espionage thriller follows a group of failed MI5 agents as they are drawn into dangerous plots against Britain. The groups leader and boss, Jackson Lamb, is played by actor Gary Oldman who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
- The White Lotus, streaming on Max, is nominated for its third season. The dark comedy drama series focuses on the interactions of rich guests at luxurious resorts called White Lotus. Each season features new characters, a new resort, and a new death. The series provides a satirical view of society and the wealthy.
