Music Review: The Truth Behind “Revival”

At age 23, Selena Gomez has already created a huge name for herself. With the help of Disney, Gomez was able to launch a successful acting career on teen-sitcom, Wizards of Waverly Place, and star in various movies. This led her to the opportunity to work with Hollywood Records, a recording label owned by Disney. By age 21, Gomez recorded her fifth and final album For You with Hollywood records, ending her partnership with Disney altogether.

In 2015, Selena Gomez partnered with Interscope Labels and began recording her newest album, Revival. This record gives her listeners an understanding of all the obstacles she has faced over the past few years including soul-searching, heartbreak, and loss.

Number one on the Billboard 200 chart, Revival is a huge leap from Gomez’s past albums. She definitely establishes a sense of maturity and confidence. Gomez’s goal for Revival, is to recreate her name from a cute and innocent 16 year old girl, to a wise and confident young woman. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Harlem MC says, “Honestly, she [Selena] wasn’t looking for a No. 1 hit. She did it to excommunicate herself from her image. That’s brave.”

It is evident through her songs that Gomez has been through a lot emotionally. In “Same Old Love,” a top single from Revival, Gomez sings, “You left in peace, left me in pieces…too hard to breathe, I’m on my knees…I’m so sick of that same old love.” Although it’s easy to believe this could be about a specific breakup, Gomez explains “Same Old Love” is mostly about her rocky relationship with her father, the first male figure in her life.

Hard copies of Revival are available in local Walmart and Target locations, as well as online, on iTunes and Spotify. As Gomez reestablishes her name, Revival continues to dominate the charts all over.
