Thanksgiving: Back to Normal

Thanksgiving%3A+Back+to+Normal

This year for Thanksgiving, families are attempting to return back to their original Thanksgiving traditions prior to the COVID 19 pandemic. For many, Thanksgiving last year consisted of zoom calls, little to no travelling, and being apart from family members. It was a holiday season spent in solitude. Most people spent Thanksgiving with only their direct family excluding cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. Although the pandemic is still prevalent in people’s lives, many vaccinated families are returning to gathering together this year. Families may not be ready for large group settings but are taking strides towards becoming back to normal.

At Assumption last year, after leaving for holiday break, students didn’t return back to school until the new year. This year, students are able to return after Thanksgiving and finish out the semester as a community. Families are beginning to travel again during the break. With higher vaccination rates and lower COVID cases, families are at less of a risk to travel. Also, families feel less at risk to gather with their older relatives. Sophomore Mia Korfhage said, “This Thanksgiving is unlike last year because I am able to see my grandparents without being fearful of getting them sick. Time with them is what makes the holiday special and I am glad I can see them without having to be socially distant.” Time spent away from family members allows for this Thanksgiving to be special. Some families haven’t gathered together in a couple years and now are able to spend quality time together. Freshman Jordan Marks said, “It is nice to be able to have all my cousins come into town for Thanksgiving this year. I am excited to reconnect with them after all that has happened with the pandemic.”

COVID 19 stung families with distance and fear. This holiday season, people are making strides to feel the magic of family, gratitude, and love again.
