There is a large stigma around politics in today’s youth. The conversations of political beliefs often raise
hesitancy provoke questions like: “We are not old enough to vote, why should we care?” or “You are just
starting drama, nobody wants to start a debate right now.”
But what many people do not understand is that the youth of today have had, and will continue to have,
huge impacts on political movements. Our generation’s participation in politics brings many benefits
such as new perspectives on reoccurring political issues and stronger future civic engagement.
Fresh perspectives in modern politics are very important. It is no secret that today’s younger
generations have new and different perspectives on controversial
topics such as education, immigration, climate change, healthcare, etc. While it is inspiring
on its own that our society’s youth is already thinking so critically at such a young age, it is
important that ideas are shared with the public and government officials that have the power to
make these ideas a reality. To speak up is to get involved. Just because we don’t have access to
government positions, does not mean we can’t still make a difference.
Being involved in politics doesn’t necessarily mean “debating.” It can simply mean being
educated. Beginning to become aware of today’s problems, advocating for what you
believe is right, and volunteering at places that align with your values is what it means to
develop a strong civic identity. Keeping up with current events and taking a little time every
now and then to become informed ensures that when it comes time for voting on our
nation’s representatives and critical matters, you will be making an informed choice.
In conclusion, being involved with politics at an early age shouldn’t be something
that is frowned upon. It is important that we become educated and start advocating for
what’s right because, in the long run, it affects us too.
Even if your involvement is subtle, like reading up on current national events, it still makes a
difference and is a small step to make the world a better place for everyone. I
encourage you to start getting involved today. Read a recent news story, repost an update on social
media, or send an email to a state senator advocating for something you
want changed. Your voice matters, no matter what age you are.
