With summer right around the corner, many people are searching for something fun to do in the heat. Luckily Louisville hosts many outdoor events all summer long. One of the most underrated events is the local flea-off markets. Whether you’re looking to thrift clothes or just grab something to eat, these outdoor markets are the perfect place to go out with your friends and family for free. The next flea-off market is on Saturday, May 9th from 11am to 6pm at Monnik Beer CO. 1036 E. Burnet Ave. Looking to get rid of some things in your house but don’t want to have a yard sale? Look no further; anyone can have a booth at the Flea-off market!
If music is more of your scene, Waterfront Wednesdays take place on the last Wednesday of every month. This event is completely free and is located on the Big Four Lawn in Louisville’s Waterfront Park. Every Wednesday hosts a different genre of artists with April being the jazz month and May being the bluegrass month. If you have free time on a Wednesday night, get some people together and be sure to go support our local muiscal artists!
Another outdoor option is the Kentucky Shakespeare festival in Central Park. This event is in Historic Old Louisville and admission is completely free. Shakespeare in the Park has a few different dates depending on which show you are attending. The plays scheduled for this year are As You Like It, Antony and Cleopatra, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Ophelia. If you are interested in Shakespeare or theatre, this is the perfect event for you!
You may be wanting a Pinterest-worthy movie night, but don’t quite know how to make it happen on your own. Luckily, the Downtown Drive-In at Waterfront Park provides the perfect place for a cozy night with friends. Movie nights take place May through October and are the perfect place for a small get-together on a warm summer night. Don’t forget to pack a lawn chair and some blankets. No tickets are required and all movie nights are free to attend.
Are you athletic and looking for a large community event based around fitness? The Mayor’s Hike and Bike and Paddle on Waterfront Park’s Great Lawn could be the perfect fit for you! Activities start at 8 a.m. And include a 4-mile hike, biking through downtown, and paddling on the Ohio river. This day of outdoor fitness is free and a great way to get involved in the local athletic space.
There are just so many local events available to help keep you busy this summer. Mark your calendars and tell your friends to help us support our community and become involved in something bigger. Remember, you don’t have to spend money to have a meaningful, memorable time.
